This George III sterling silver chamberstick dates from 1814 and originates from Sheffield, made by the makers Nicholson and Hoult. The piece is fashioned from solid silver with a bright polished finish in a gleaming silver colour. It comprises a circular tray with a scalloped shell-motif rim and a gadrooned border, supporting a central turned candle socket. Beside the socket sits a detachable conical snuffer with a finial top and a small scroll handle. Hallmarks appear under the base, and the associated snuffer bears its own hallmarks. The item measures 16 cm in diameter and weighs 350 grams. In a modern interior, this chamberstick sits suitably on a mantelpiece as a decorative accent or functional piece. Its classic Georgian styling and heavy solid silver construction suit traditional or period-inspired spaces.

A chamberstick is a portable candle holder designed with a broad tray base, handle, and often a conical snuffer, historically used to light ones path to bed during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Georgian chambersticks were typically raised or cast in solid sterling silver or Sheffield plate, designed with weighted or gadrooned bases to catch wax drippings.

Authentic pieces feature full British hallmarks stamped on the tray, socket, and snuffer, detailing the makers mark, silver standard mark, town mark, date letter, and sovereign duty mark.

Place the chamberstick on a bedside table, mantelpiece, or sideboard alongside leather-bound books or botanical prints to add historical metalwork interest.

Clean regularly using a soft cotton cloth and specialist non-abrasive silver polish, removing wax residue carefully using warm water rather than metal implements.
