This Edwardian pendant is an Art Nouveau Jugendstil piece made of nine-carat gold, featuring a central pear-cut purple amethyst and white pearl accents. The design incorporates openwork whiplash wirework framing the central gemstone, a small pearl positioned directly above, and a dangling seed pearl suspended below. The gold exhibits a rich warm tone, while the amethyst displays deep violet facets and the pearls show a lustrous creamy sheen. The piece measures 1.5 x 3.5 cm, excluding the top bail, and weighs 2.8 g, bearing a stamped 9C mark on the reverse. In a contemporary home, this pendant is worn as personal adornment suspended from a chain, serving as a delicate accessory for special occasions or daily wear. It integrates seamlessly into modern collections of antique jewellery, offering a subtle historic accent that complements both casual and formal attire. The secure setting and integrated hanging loops ensure it fastens easily to standard necklace chains for versatile display and use.

Art Nouveau and Jugendstil jewellery, originating between 1890 and 1910, is defined by sinuous, organic lines, asymmetrical curves, and nature-inspired motifs. Craftsmen prioritised artistic form and gemstone colour harmony over high intrinsic material value.

Jugendstil pendants frequently utilised yellow gold, silver, semi-precious gemstones such as amethyst, garnet, and opals, alongside natural seed or blister pearls. Enamelling techniques were also widely incorporated.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-finished wirework, period-appropriate hallmarks or maker marks, and characteristic whiplash curves. Gemstone settings from this era typically feature bezel or rub-over designs with soft metal patination.

An antique pendant can be worn on a delicate fine gold chain to complement modern necklines, layering effectively with simple modern chains or paired with tailored wear.

Store the pendant separately in a soft lined box to prevent scratching, and clean surfaces using a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid soaking items containing pearls or applying harsh chemical cleaner solutions.
