Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian landscape photo frame dates from 1889 and is made from sterling silver with a bright silver finish. The rectangular frame has an ornate border decorated with repousse scrollwork, Rococo revival scrolls, and foliate detailing in relief. Inside the border sits a dark blue backing material visible through the central window. Hallmarks for London and the silversmith's mark for William Comyns appear on the silver element, alongside a wooden back panel. The frame measures 11.5 cm across by 9 cm in height. Placed on a mantelpiece or a side table, this antique piece holds a treasured family portrait or landscape photograph behind its decorative metalwork border. The design suits period interiors or traditional studies, adding a refined metallic accent to surfaces around the home. The compact proportions allow it to sit easily on shelves, desks, or dressing tables alongside other decorative objects without dominating the space.

FAQs

Victorian photo frames from the late nineteenth century typically feature elaborate decorative work, including repousse, chasing, and Rococo Revival scrollwork. Designed primarily for tabletop display on desks or mantelpieces, these frames showcase intricate foliate, floral, and architectural motifs surrounding a central display window.

High-end Victorian photo frames were commonly constructed from sterling silver or silver plate, often backed with velvet, leather, or polished dark wood. The metallic fronts were often die-stamped or hand-hammered using repousse technique to create relief patterns on thin silver sheets.

Authentic British sterling silver frames feature full set hallmarks stamped into the metal, including the lion passant mark, a city assay mark, a makers mark, and a specific date letter. The presence of natural oxidisation in the recessed detailing and genuine period backing materials like worn velvet also helps verify age.

An ornate silver photo frame serves as a focal accent on a contemporary desk, mantelpiece, or bedside table. Placing it alongside minimalist modern ceramics or streamlined books creates a curated contrast between detailed historical silverware and contemporary lines.

Clean sterling silver frames using a soft, non-abrasive silver polishing cloth to gently remove tarnish while preserving the intentional patination in deep recessed areas. Avoid immersing the piece in liquid polishes or water, as moisture can ruin the internal textile or leather backing.
