Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 1930 Art Deco brooch takes the form of an oval piece constructed from silver and Blue John fluorite. The central oval cabochon displays distinctive bands of purple and yellow tones, held securely within a smooth collet setting. Encircling the stone is an openwork silver frame decorated with interlinked loops, engraved striations on the scalloped border, and a textured lattice pattern. The reverse reveals a marked silver stamp alongside a pin secured with a traditional c-clasp, while the surrounding fabric surface appears in grey. Measuring 2.7 cm high by 3.4 cm wide with a depth of 1 cm, this brooch serves as a personal accessory to be worn on garments in daily life.

FAQs

Blue John is a mineral variety of fluorite characterised by its distinct purple, yellow, and white banding, sourced from Castleton, Derbyshire. During the Art Deco period, jewellers utilised its natural linear banding to complement geometric gemstone settings in sterling silver.

Art Deco Blue John brooches feature hand-cut and polished Blue John fluorite cabochons set into sterling silver frames, often decorated with engine-turned pattern work, openwork lattice, or scalloped borders.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural irregular colour banding distinct to Derbyshire fluorite, alongside period silver hallmarks or sterling marks and traditional period clasps such as safety C-catches or rollover clasps.

An antique silver brooch can be pinned to the lapel of a tailored blazer, attached to a wool coat collar, or used to secure a silk scarf as a subtle decorative accent.

Because Blue John is a soft mineral, it must be cleaned using only a dry, soft microfibre cloth rather than liquid chemical cleaners or ultrasonic baths, while the silver setting can be wiped with a dry silver polishing cloth.
