Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This rare Scottish hallmarked silver bookmark from the 1930 Victorian novelty style displays a polished silver colour throughout its solid sterling silver construction. The terminal displays a cast relief figure of Mr. Punch beneath his signature pointed hat, positioned above a textured floral moulding and a flat clip section stamped with clear and readable Scottish hallmarks. The design incorporates a central slot creating a functional clip for securing pages within a volume. Measuring 6.7 cm high, 1.5 cm wide, and 0.4 cm deep, this piece serves as a practical desktop accessory for a gentleman's library or office desk. Readers place the flat silver clip between the pages of a book to hold a place, positioning the figural handle upright above the top edge for easy retrieval during daily study or leisure reading.

FAQs

Novelty silver bookmarks emerged as popular gift items in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, combining practical reading utilities with cast or stamped decorative handles depicting figures, animals, or crests.

These items were predominantly crafted from sterling silver, formed using pressing, stamping, or lost-wax casting techniques to create detailed terminal figures before being finished with engraved or punched hallmarks.

Authentic Scottish silver pieces feature official assay marks, such as the thistle mark for sterling purity alongside specific town marks like Edinburghs castle or Glasgows tree, fish, and bell symbol, accompanied by a makers mark and date letter.

An antique silver bookmark can be displayed resting on an open volume on a coffee table, arranged in a shallow display box, or styled alongside traditional stationery on a desk.

Maintain the silver by dusting with a soft cotton cloth and gently applying a specialist silver polishing cloth to remove tarnish, avoiding harsh chemical dips that could strip deliberate patination or wear down fine hallmarking.
