Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. This Edwardian sterling silver photo frame dates to 1920. It has a circular form with a raised convex moulding rim, a circular aperture, a stepped moulding, and a black easel backing. The silver shows minor surface scratches, small dinks, and dents around the edge, alongside polished highlights and visible hallmarks for Birmingham 1918. The frame has a width of 9.5 cm. Ideal for placement on a mantelpiece, this piece suits an English Country House interior aesthetic. It provides a classic home for a cherished family portrait or photographic print on a desk, bookshelf, or side table. The compact proportions allow it to sit comfortably within both traditional and contemporary interior settings.

FAQs

Silver photo frames became widely popular during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras as photography became an accessible medium for displaying family portraits. Artisans crafted these pieces in various geometric and circular forms, typically featuring easel backs to facilitate tabletop display.

These frames were generally made from sterling silver or silver plate sheet metal, often pressed over a mahogany or pine core. The reverse side usually features a velvet, leather, or wooden backing fitted with a hinged support, while flat glass protects the photograph.

Authentic British pieces usually display official silver hallmarks stamped along the outer rim or border, denoting the silver purity, assay office, maker, and date letter. Original backing materials such as aged velvet, wood grain, and historical structural fittings further assist in identification.

A circular silver frame can be positioned on a contemporary console table, desk, or bedside unit alongside ceramics and books. Grouping various metallic picture frames across flat surfaces adds textured historical accents to minimalist modern spaces.

Dust the silver and glass regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, applying specialist silver polishing cloths gently to remove tarnish. Avoid dipping the item in liquid polishes or exposing the fabric easel back to moisture, which can cause glue separation or discolouration.
