Superb Art Deco Octagonal Tray by Orfèvrerie Christofle, Paris C.1940

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

A superb octagonal tray, beautiful quality to be expected by the top notch silversmith, Christofle of Paris. It is styled as an elongated octagon (cushion shape), transitioning away from traditional smooth ovals into a mid-century geometric silhouette.

The rim features an elegant, multi-stepped raised edge that creates a framed border around the polished central well. This architectural style was favoured for formal serving because it catches light brilliantly along the facets while effectively containing liquid or glassware.

The tray is fully marked on the underside with the Christofle stamp with the scale mark above together with the Knight Square (OC): The square stamp features a Chess Knight (Rider) symbol flanked by the letters "O" and "C" (standing for Orfèvrerie Christofle).

Maison Christofle is an iconic French silversmith and luxury homegoods manufacturer founded in Paris in 1830 by the visionary industrialist Charles Christofle. For nearly two centuries, the company revolutionized how precious metals were used, transforming silverware from an exclusive luxury of royalty into a hallmark of refined living across the globe.

The house became the official supplier to King Louis-Philippe I and later Emperor Napoleon III, creating massive, breath-taking centrepieces and banquet service sets for French palaces.

Christofle swept gold medals at the legendary World Fairs, including the 1851 Great Exhibition in London and the 1855 Universal Exhibition in Paris. They soon provided lavish custom tableware to foreign monarchs, sultanates, luxury ocean liners, and grand hotels.

Just back from our silversmith's workshop where it has been professionally cleaned and polished, restoring it to it's former glory (minor wear commensurate with age and use). Excellent condition measuring 18 1/2" x 16".

This Art Deco serving tray is made by Orfèvrerie Christofle in Paris around 1940. Fashioned from silver-plated metal in a bright silver colour, the piece takes an elongated octagonal cushion shape with a polished reflective central well and a faceted rim. A multi-stepped raised edge frames the perimeter, creating a distinct architectural border with crisp linear mouldings that catch the light. The underside carries the official manufacturer stamp with the scale mark and the knight square incorporating the initials O and C. Minor surface wear remains visible from past use alongside the freshly polished finish. The tray measures 2.54 cm high by 47 cm wide and 40.64 cm deep. Placed on top of a dining room sideboard or a living room console table, it functions as a formal display surface for serving glassware, decanters, or cocktail accessories.

Art Deco silver design focuses on geometric simplicity, bold architectural outlines, and polished reflective surfaces. Moving away from intricate Victorian ornamentation, pieces from this period often feature stepped rims, octagonal forms, and streamlined profiles inspired by early twentieth-century modernism.

French silver trays from the Art Deco period were typically manufactured from solid sterling silver or high-grade electroplated nickel silver (EPNS). Makers applied thick layers of silver plating over base metal alloys to produce heavy, durable table service items with a bright finish.

Authenticity is verified by examining maker marks, hallmarks, and structural details. Period pieces show characteristic maker stamps, purity indicators or electroplate standard marks, along with clean geometric hand-finishing and precise edge mouldings true to the era.

An octagonal silver tray serves as a functional foundation for styling bar carts, coffee tables, or sideboards. It acts as a reflective catch-all for decanters, crystal glassware, or small curated objects, anchoring vignettes with a structured geometric shape.

Clean silver plate using a soft cotton cloth and specialized, non-abrasive silver polish to prevent removing the surface plating. Avoid harsh chemical dips, store in dry conditions to minimise oxidisation, and wash by hand in warm soapy water before thoroughly drying immediately.
