This Edwardian sterling silver bread fork, hallmarked for Sheffield in 1902, belongs to the serving forks category and sits within an English Country House style context. The three-pronged serving head displays an intricate pierced and engraved design of scrolling foliage and stylised flowers, joined by a silver ferrule to a naturally rippled, carved mother-of-pearl handle with a spherical finial. The silver exhibits light surface wear consistent with age and gentle use, while the white mother-of-pearl handle shows tonal variation and no chips or cracks. The fork rests inside a presentation case lined with vibrant red velvet and pale satin silk, enclosed in a dark burgundy hinged box. It measures 19 cm in length. Today, this piece finds its place on a sideboard top for serving bread during dining or tea service.

Designed during the Edwardian era between 1901 and 1910, a bread fork is a specialised piece of serving flatware used to transfer slices of bread, brioche, or rolls from a communal basket to an individual plate.

Serving forks from this period were commonly crafted from sterling silver or silver plate, frequently featuring handles made from mother-of-pearl, bone, or horn paired with intricately pierced metal tines.

Authentic British pieces bear official hallmark stamps indicating silver purity via the lion passant, an assay office symbol, a date letter, and a silversmith maker mark.

Incorporate the utensil into formal table settings alongside modern tableware to add textural contrast, or display it flat on a sideboard within a glass display tray alongside period glassware.

Polish the silver section using a soft cloth and specialised silver polish, taking care to avoid submersing the mother-of-pearl handle in water or exposing it to harsh chemical treatments.
