Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

This George III Old Sheffield plate snuffer tray dates from circa 1800. The piece takes a classical navette form with an elegant pierced galleried border, reeded details, and a plain base, showing a silver colour with visible reflections on its reflective metallic surface and faint dark spotting across the interior floor. The open lattice work creates an intricate pattern around the raised rim, which terminates in sharp pointed ends. Measuring 22 cm in length, 8 cm in width, and 2 cm in height, the tray provides a compact surface suitable for a sideboard top in an English country house setting.

FAQs

A snuffer tray is a narrow, shallow dish crafted specifically to hold wick trimmers or candle snuffers. During the Georgian era, these trays were routinely placed on sideboards and dining tables to collect wax remnants and keep table linens clean.

Old Sheffield plate was produced by fusing a layer of sterling silver to an ingot of copper using high heat and rolling mills. The combined metal sheet was then hand-hammered and pierced into decorative forms before modern electroplating techniques existed.

Authentic pieces often exhibit silver rubbed thin over time, revealing the reddish copper substrate beneath, a characteristic known as bleeding. They typically feature hand-pierced detailing and lack modern sterling silver hallmarks, occasionally displaying distinctive maker stamps.

An antique silver snuffer tray functions well as a refined container for keys on a console, desk stationary on a writing bureau, or delicate jewellery on a dressing table. Its geometric navette profile integrates easily alongside contemporary ceramics and glassware.

Clean gently using a soft cotton cloth and mild silver polish formulated for antiques, avoiding aggressive buffing that can strip the silver layer. Store in a dry environment to minimise tarnish and oxidisation.
