This Edwardian preserve jar dates from the George V period and originates from England. It pairs a baluster vaseline glass body with a polished sterling silver lid and a solid silver spoon by the silversmith George Unite, hallmarked in Birmingham in 1917. The glass displays a green and milky white spiral staved pattern, complemented by a notched lid featuring a loop handle finial and a matching finial on the spoon handle. The jar stands 10 cm high with a 7.5 cm rim diameter. In a contemporary home, this piece suits placement on a dining room sideboard top or a kitchen shelf for serving preserves. It functions as a decorative tabletop accessory or a functional tableware item for breakfast or afternoon tea service. The polished silver elements and the swirling green glass design create a refined visual display suitable for traditional interior settings.

FAQs

A preserve pot is a specialised tableware vessel designed for serving jams, jellies, or marmalades, frequently made with uranium glass which exhibits a characteristic yellow-green colouration under light.

These vessels commonly combine hand-blown or moulded glassware, such as vaseline or cranberry glass, with hallmarked sterling silver or electroplated nickel silver lids and matching serving spoons.

Authentic silver items feature clear hallmark stamps indicating the silversmith, purity grade, assay office, and date letter, while genuine vaseline glass contains trace amounts of uranium dioxide that fluoresces bright green under UV light.

These compact glassware items can be displayed on a dining room sideboard, integrated into a glass cabinet collection, or repurposed as a refined dressing table container for small trinkets.

Hand wash the glass body in warm, soapy water using a non-abrasive cloth, and gently polish the silver mountings using a dedicated silver cloth to avoid stripping natural patination or damaging glass seals.
