Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE REGENCY ERA:
Woven wire diamond mesh: early nineteenth-century fire safety guard construction.
Rolled brass top rail with soft wear: many decades of handling and cleaning.
Hand-formed iron base rim and vertical support stays: ironwork before modern wire assembly.
Folded sheet-iron fixing brackets: traditional fastening technique joining rail to mesh.

This Regency fireguard is a practical three-sided hearth accessory formed from black iron wire mesh with a contrasting polished gold brass top rail and a solid black base. Dating from the Regency period, the design includes a rounded tubular rim and vertical framing supports that enclose the hearth space. Measuring 69 cm high, 122 cm wide, and 46 cm deep, the restored piece is in very good overall condition. Today, this fireguard is positioned on a fireplace hearth in a living room or study to provide a classic protective barrier in front of an open fire. The proportions suit traditional fireplace surrounds, adding period character to a domestic interior.

A Regency fireguard is a protective hearth screen originating in the early 19th century, designed to enclose an open fire and prevent sparks or coals from escaping onto surrounding floors. These pieces typically feature fine woven wire mesh framed with brass or iron trim.

Regency fireguards were predominantly constructed using woven black iron or steel wire mesh to allow heat and light to radiate while containing embers. The top rim and structural framing were frequently capped with polished brass for durability and visual contrast.

Authentic Regency fireguards showcase hand-woven wire mesh with subtle structural variations and a darkened natural metal patina. The brass rimming is usually secured with period rivets or hand-fitted joints rather than modern continuous welding.

Place the fireguard directly on the hearth surrounding an open fireplace or stove opening. Its dark wire body and metallic top rail complement both traditional period surrounds and minimalist contemporary fireplaces.

Dust the mesh regularly using a dry soft-bristle brush or vacuum brush attachment to remove soot particles. Clean brass elements with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners that could strip historic surface patination.
