A Rare Peter & Jonathan Bateman Silver Tablespoon

18th century
Description

A Maker's mark that is the Holy Grail for collectors of Bateman Family silver. This rare find is an Old English pattern silver tablespoon, bearing the maker's mark of Peter & Jonathan Bateman. Jonathan Bateman went into business with his Brother and struck a mark in 1790. This mark is found for 5 months and only in 1790, due to Jonathan's untimely death. Peter then set up business with Jonathan's widow, Ann and the Bateman dynasty continued.

Due to the extremely limited time that this mark was struck, it has become most sought after by collectors, commanding interest even greater than the matriarch Hester Bateman (Jonathan's mother).

Collectable and practical tablespoons are always in demand and this example has no engraved armorials or initials. Dimensions below.

This Georgian sterling silver tablespoon originates from the eighteenth century, specifically 1790, and carries the maker's mark of Peter and Jonathan Bateman. The piece is formed from silver with a polished finish and a silver colour palette. Visible details include an elongated oval bowl, a smooth tapered stem in the Old English pattern, a drop stem heel, and stamped hallmarks with slight softening to the maker's mark, while the surface is free of engraved armorials or initials with no visible dents or splits. The item measures 21.8 cm high, 4.3 cm wide, and 1.5 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this item serves as functional cutlery or display pieces on a sideboard top within an English Country House setting. Collectors value the specific five-month production window of this mark following Jonathan Bateman's death before Peter partnered with Ann Bateman, alongside the practical nature of the untransformed bowl tip.

Georgian silver flatware from the late 18th century is recognised for its balanced proportions, clean lines, and functional elegance. Styles such as the Old English and Fiddle patterns emerged during this era, featuring smooth, tapered handles and hand-forged bowls.

British silver spoons of this period were hand-hammered from sterling silver containing 92.5 percent pure silver combined with copper for structural durability. Silversmiths shaped the piece from a single ingot, raising the bowl and forging the stem entirely by hand.

Authenticity is determined by examining the set of struck hallmarks on the reverse of the stem. These typically include the makers mark, the sterling lion passant, the town mark such as the London leopards head, a date letter, and the monarch duty mark.

Antique silver spoons can be integrated into contemporary table settings by pairing them with modern linen napkins, plain ceramic dinnerware, or minimalist glassware. They can also be displayed on dining sideboards or in glass-fronted cabinets as decorative accents.

Wash the silver gently in warm water with mild soap and dry immediately with a soft cloth. Apply a specialised silver polish sparingly with a cotton sponge to remove surface oxidisation, avoiding harsh chemical dips or abrasive scrubbing.
