This pair of Victorian solid brass fire dogs, dating from 1860, is designed for placement on a fireplace hearth. The matching fire dogs are rendered in a warm golden brass colour with a polished metallic finish, displaying subtle surface wear consistent with age. Each piece comprises a spiral twisted finial at the top, a central spherical knop decorated with decorative raised mouldings around the middle, and three shaped tripod legs terminating in scrolled feet. They measure 42 cm high, 23 cm wide, and 17 cm deep. In a contemporary home, these decorative firedogs are positioned inside an open hearth to support logs or simply to flank a fireplace opening as a decorative accessory.

Fire dogs, also known as andirons, are decorative metal supports placed in pairs within an open fireplace to elevate burning logs, improving airflow and combustion during the Victorian era.

Historically, fire dogs were sand-cast or die-cast from solid brass, bronze, or cast iron, often featuring cast metal joinery and heavy bases to withstand extreme heat without warping.

Authentic pieces feature signs of natural hand-finishing, threaded rod assembly through the central shaft, subtle casting imperfections, and genuine patination or dark oxidisation in deep crevices.

Position these pieces within an unused fireplace hearth to add architectural structure, or display them beside a stove or alcove as sculptural brass accents in period or contemporary living spaces.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and use a non-abrasive metal polish sparingly if a bright finish is preferred, avoiding harsh chemicals that strip protective patina.
