These nineteenth-century Victorian fire dogs display a traditional English Country House design, constructed from warm gold brass and iron. Each dog exhibits a large spherical ball finial surmounting a turned baluster column, with splayed legs terminating in pad feet. The design incorporates rear brass rests and secondary iron guard rails supporting the billets. Visible details include polished metal surfaces with light tarnish and minor surface wear consistent with age, alongside intricate turnings on the vertical columns. Measuring 44 cm high, 28 cm wide, and 60 cm deep, these decorative implements function practically and visually within a fireplace hearth setting. They integrate smoothly into both traditional and contemporary interiors as functional fireplace furniture, positioned directly in front of an open hearth to hold logs or support fire irons in a living room or study.

Fire dogs, also known as andirons, are paired metal supports used in open fireplaces to hold burning logs off the hearth floor. This elevated position allows air to circulate underneath the wood, improving combustion and directing smoke up the chimney.

Victorian fire dogs were typically constructed using cast or wrought iron for the rear billets that held the burning logs, combined with cast or spun brass for the decorative front uprights and finials that faced the room.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples often display hand-turned cast brass components, threaded iron rod constructions joining the front to the rear billet, and natural wear or oxidisation on the iron sections exposed to fire.

In contemporary settings, brass fire dogs can be placed inside disused or decorative open fireplaces to add warm metallic tones and architectural interest. They can also serve as decorative accents in alcoves or beside wood-burning stoves.

The brass front components can be maintained with a specialised metal polish and a soft microfibre cloth to retain their lustre. The iron billets should be kept dry and cleaned with a stiff brush or treated with grate polish to prevent rust.
