This nineteenth-century French Rococo Revival bonheur du jour desk is formed from warm brown rosewood and amboyna veneer with ormolu and brass hardware. The piece incorporates a raised upper shelf enclosed by a brass gallery rail, alongside two small top drawers, a sliding writing surface, and a single large drawer beneath the main desk top furnished with an ornate keyhole escutcheon and key. Sweeping cabriole legs display gilt-metal ormolu mounts at the shoulders and feet, while ormolu beading edges the upper surfaces and drawers. The visible timber grain shows rich tonal variations across the veneers, accompanied by minor woodworm holes on the right-hand side. Standing at 87.6 cm high, 71.7 cm wide, and 49.5 cm deep, this writing desk functions well as a practical study surface or a decorative display unit in a reception room, library, or bedroom. The compact footprint enables placement in tighter corners or against feature walls, providing organized surface space for correspondence and personal writing tasks.

A bonheur du jour is a style of small French writing desk that emerged in the eighteenth century. Characterised by a raised back section with drawers or small cupboards, it was designed primarily for writing personal letters and storing stationery.

These desks traditionally feature fine cabinet timber veneers such as rosewood, amboyna, or tulipwood, often finished with gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts and brass gallery railings.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, cast and chased brass or bronze mounts with original gilt patina, and high-quality natural timber veneers over solid hardwood cores.

Position the desk in a quiet alcove or living space paired with a contemporary table lamp or tailored upholstered chair to highlight its decorative silhouette against modern surroundings.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft microfiber cloth and applying microcrystalline wax sparingly, while avoiding direct sunlight and maintaining stable humidity to protect the timber veneers and patinated metalwork.
