Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 18th century Dutch bureau is constructed from solid walnut, burr walnut veneers, and oak, decorated throughout with profuse multi-wood floral and bird marquetry inlay against a warm brown timber ground. The piece stands at 102 cm high, 110 cm wide, and 61 cm deep, featuring a lockable slant-front fall and three graduated long drawers with pinched-serpentine outlines. Pierced brass drop handles and matching escutcheons accent the drawer fronts, while the front rests upon elongated turned solid walnut feet. Suitable for a traditional study or a gentleman's library, the surface has a waxed finish displaying a rich patina. The fall front opens to a fitted stepped interior containing drawers, pigeon holes, a central cupboard, and a well with a brown leather writing insert. Sympathetically cleaned and revived, the bureau provides practical workspace and storage while retaining its traditional Dutch Baroque style and decorative character.

FAQs

An 18th-century Dutch marquetry bureau is a slant-front writing desk featuring intricate floral or figurative wood inlay techniques known as marquetry, popularised in the Netherlands during the Baroque period.

These bureaus are typically constructed from an oak carcass veneered in fine walnut or burr walnut, with marquetry patterns crafted using fruitwoods, boxwood, and cast brass hardware.

Authentic 18th-century Dutch marquetry features hand-cut veneers, hand-dovetailed drawer construction, natural timber ageing, and detailed motifs such as floral urns, foliage, and birds.

Position the bureau against a neutral backdrop alongside contemporary lighting and subtle artwork to allow the detailed marquetry work and walnut grain to act as a focal point.

Keep the bureau away from direct sunlight and heat sources to avoid veneer lifting or timber movement, and apply a clear beeswax polish sparingly to maintain the wood finish.
