Ormolu

(from French 'or moulu', signifying ground or pounded gold) is an 18th-century English term for applying finely ground, high-carat gold in a mercury amalgam to an object of bronze. The mercury is driven off in a kiln, leaving behind a gold-coloured veneer known as 'gilt bronze'.

The manufacture of true ormolu employs a process known as mercury-gilding or fire-gilding, in which a solution of nitrate of mercury is applied to a piece of copper, brass, or bronze, followed by the application of an amalgam of gold and mercury. The item was then exposed to extreme heat until the mercury burned off and the gold remained, adhered to the metal object.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Crisp relief casting with matted backgrounds: late nineteenth-century French foundry casting.
Electroplated silver over cast metal: finish introduced during the Victorian period.
Three-arm branches bolted into central bosses: standard turn-of-the-century assembly.
Campana nozzles and foliate drip pans: classical revival detailing from the 1900s.

This set of four French Baroque revival wall lights dates from circa 1900 and exhibits a silver-plated finish in silver. Each piece incorporates a shaped shield back decorated with acanthus leaves, 'S' scrolls, and lattice centre panels, issuing three scrolling candle arms with campana urn nozzles, candle-shaped bulb holders, and pointed finials. The metal shows a polished reflective surface across the ornate cast backplate and scrolling branches. The set measures 45 cm high, 43 cm wide, and 35 cm deep. Position these wall appliques in a living room, hallway, or dining room to illuminate narrow wall spaces with period character. They provide functional wall-mounted lighting while adding decorative symmetry to an interior scheme through their detailed floral and leaf motifs.

French Rococo wall appliques, originating in the 18th century and revived during the late 19th century, feature asymmetrical curves, flowing acanthus leaf motifs, and ornate cast detail designed to reflect candlelight across grand interiors.

During the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, quality wall lights were typically cast in solid brass or bronze before being finished with silver plating, gilding, or patination to complement period interior decor.

Authentic period sconces often exhibit hand-chased surface details, visible casting seams on the reverse, threaded assembly components, and natural wear or tarnish to the silver-plated finish near joints and high points.

Silver-plated sconces provide striking architectural contrast when mounted against dark or textured walls, flanking a central artwork or mirror in dining rooms, hallways, and formal living areas.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid harsh chemical polishes that can strip delicate silver plating; instead, use a specialised silver cloth or mild soapy water applied sparingly with a soft sponge, drying immediately.
