Art Deco is a design movement that originated in Paris during the 1910s and reached its height of popularity in the 1920s and 1930s, characterised by sleek geometric shapes, streamlined forms, and modern materials.

Art Deco silversmiths frequently utilised sterling silver combined with decorative techniques such as engine-turned guilloche enamel, bakelite, and inlaid gemstones to create high-contrast geometric patterns.

Authentic pieces typically feature proper hallmarks stamped into the metal indicating the makers mark, assay office, and date letter, alongside hand-applied enamel with natural age-related crazing or micro-wear.

Antique desk accessories can be displayed thoughtfully on a home office desk, bookshelf, or coffee table tray to add a layer of historical texture and refined craftsmanship to contemporary spaces.

Silver should be cleaned gently with a non-abrasive specialist cloth to preserve hallmarks, while enamel surfaces must be kept away from direct sunlight, extreme heat, and harsh chemical solvents to prevent fading and cracking.
