Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Chinoiserie floor standing lamp dates from 1930 and follows an Oriental Chinese style. Made of wood and finished in black lacquer, the piece is enriched with hand-painted gold Chinoiserie motifs and figures across its vertical surface. The wooden stem includes a turned baluster construction with layered spherical sections and carved bulbous mouldings picked out in cream and gold paint. A circular moulded base anchors the structure, while brass electrical hardware caps the top of the shaft. Signs of age appear as scattered surface wear, minor paint losses, and scuffing throughout the black lacquer finish. Standing approximately 165 cm tall, the lamp has an imposing vertical profile suitable for corner placement or positioning beside a seating area. In a contemporary home, this floor standing lamp serves as an accent piece in a living room, drawing room, or study, providing atmospheric illumination while adding decorative character. The black ground and metallic gold details integrate easily into English Country House or eclectic interiors, pairing well with traditional wooden furniture or neutral upholstery. The slender silhouette allows the lamp to fit snugly into tighter spaces such as an end-of-sofa arrangement or an empty corner that requires height and visual interest. Operation relies on standard floor lamp usage with a bulb socket at the upper terminal, ready for wiring and a suitable fabric shade to complete the presentation.

FAQs

Chinoiserie is a European decorative movement that originated in the seventeenth century, incorporating stylized Chinese artistic motifs, figurative scenes, and traditional lacquer work onto furniture and lighting fixtures.

These lamps were constructed using turned wooden stems and circular bases, which were coated in multiple layers of dark varnish or lacquer before being detailed by hand with gold leaf, gilt powder, and coloured pigments.

Authentic period pieces exhibit fine hand-painted detailing showing minor natural surface wear, turned timber joinery, age-appropriate patination on the lacquer, and early brass electrical fittings.

A Chinoiserie standard lamp brings visual height and historic character when positioned beside traditional seating, within a reading nook, or alongside understated contemporary furnishings to create contrast.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, avoid solvents or abrasive cleaners that degrade lacquer, and keep the lamp situated away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber warping.
