This late 19th Century silver plated serving tray by John Harrison of Sheffield operates as a salver in a Victorian style. The piece presents a circular silver surface with an engraved floral scroll centre, an acanthus leaf engraved design, an engraved cartouche, and a piecrust border finished with a shell and scroll rim. Three short cast feet support the solid body, which displays wear to the raised edges and a solder reinforcement on one foot. Marked for the maker, the tray measures 4 cm high, 36 cm wide, and 36 cm deep. Suitable for placement on a sideboard top, this item functions as a serving plate in an English country house setting.

FAQs

A salver is traditionally a flat silver or silver-plated tray without handles that rests on short feet, originally used for serving drinks or presenting letters. A waiter is a smaller version of a salver, whereas general serving trays typically feature handles and larger surfaces for carrying heavy crockery.

During the late Victorian period, electroplating was the primary method used, depositing a uniform layer of pure silver onto a base metal alloy, such as nickel silver, using electrical current.

Authentic pieces usually feature makers initials or electroplate stamps on the underside, alongside design details characteristic of the era, such as acanthus foliage, shell-moulded rims, and chased scrollwork.

A silver salver can be positioned on a sideboard or drinks cabinet to display crystal decanters and glassware, or placed flat on a coffee table to anchor candles and small decorative objects.

Wash gently with mild soapy water and dry with a soft cloth, then apply a non-abrasive silver polish using light pressure to clear tarnish without stripping the underlying silver plate.
