Silver rattles have been presented to infants as luxury keepsakes and protective amulets since the Tudor period, often combining coral, mother-of-pearl, and bells to ward off evil and soothe teething.

Traditional rattles typically feature sterling silver frames paired with organic handles made from mother-of-pearl, bone, or ivory, frequently incorporating hanging silver bells.

Authentic pieces usually display British hallmark stamps indicating the assay office, metal purity, and date letter, alongside hand-chased repousse detailing and natural wear on the organic handle.

These small objects make ideal cabinet curiosities or decorative accents when displayed on miniature stands within a glass-fronted display case or bookshelf.

Clean sterling silver gently with a specialist microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage delicate organic mother-of-pearl handles and historic solder joints.
