Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These Italian Rococo Revival wall lights from around 1900 are constructed from wood and gesso with an aged silver leaf finish. Each sconce displays pierced carving with acanthus scrollwork, floral flourishes, and a dark patina across the relief details. Two scrolling iron candle arms extend from the central backplate, supporting drip pans formed as open flowers with small candle holders at the terminals. The surface exhibits gentle wear and rubbing that reveal the darker ground beneath the metallic leaf. Each wall light measures 39 cm high, 28 cm wide, and 12 cm deep. These fixtures accommodate either wiring for electrical installation or traditional candles for ambient lighting. They suit placement on narrow wall spaces in a living room, hallway, or dining room interior designed with a French Chateau aesthetic.

FAQs

Italian wall sconces from the late 19th and early 20th centuries frequently incorporated Rococo and Baroque motifs. These pieces typically feature pierced scrollwork, acanthus leaf carvings, floral elements, and layered metal leaf gilding over hand-carved timber bases.

These wall lights were crafted using carved softwoods, such as pine or lindenwood, coated with a layer of fine plaster gesso. Thin sheets of gold or silver leaf were applied over the gesso, often aged or burnished, while iron or copper tubing formed the candle arms and light fitments.

Authentic period sconces display hand-carving marks on the reverse timber, natural wear through the gilding revealing underlying red or dark bole plaster, and subtle oxidisation to the silver or gold finish.

Mounting a pair on a narrow wall space, flanking a central mirror, or placing them on either side of a fireplace introduces classical texture and warmth. They serve as sculptural wall art even when switched off or unlit.

Remove dust using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster. Avoid applying water, liquid polishes, or chemical cleaners, as moisture can dissolve the underlying gesso and cause the delicate metal leafing to flake.
