Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1860s:
Cast brass dolphin cresting: popular decorative motif of Second Empire revival metalwork.
Dark patina in casting crevices: natural darkening from long domestic hearthside use.
Fine woven wire mesh: standard Victorian hearth spark screen fabrication.
Chased and filed brass scrollwork: hand-finishing typical of 19th-century French founders.

This French Louis revival fire screen dates to 1860 and follows a French Rococo Revival style. Constructed from warm brass and woven wire mesh, the shield-shaped frame displays ornate decoration including dolphin handles, intricate scrollwork, and out-swept cabriole feet. The brass finish has a bright golden tone highlighting the elaborate metalwork details across the arched top and pierced apron. Measuring 86 cm high, 68 cm wide, and 30 cm deep, the screen is designed to stand before a fireplace hearth in a living room, drawing room, or master bedroom to protect the interior space from sparks while adding a decorative focal point.

French Louis Revival fire screens were crafted during the nineteenth century, drawing design inspiration from eighteenth-century Louis XV and XVI styles. They were designed to shield room occupants from direct heat while adding decorative detail to unlit hearths.

These screens were predominantly constructed using cast brass or bronze frames fitted with woven wire mesh or glass panels. Heavy scrollwork, foliage motifs, and cast feet provided stability and structure.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-finished casting seams, natural patination or oxidisation in recessed areas, and hand-woven wire mesh rather than modern machine-welded screens. Original threaded fasteners and minor asymmetrical variations in cast moulds are also typical indicators.

Position the screen directly in front of a fireplace opening to create a central focal point within a living room or reception space. The metallic finish contrasts effective with both traditional stone surrounds and modern minimal hearths.

Dust the brass frame and wire mesh regularly using a soft brush or dry microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive liquid polishes that strip historical patina, opting instead for a light application of microcrystalline wax to protect the metal surface.
