This Georgian sterling silver snuff box originates from 1823. The rectangular piece displays a polished silver colour throughout its metal construction, with a hinged lid fitted to the top. Detailed floral hand-engraving covers the lid alongside scrolled elements, featuring a blank rectangular cartouche at the centre, while chased beaded borders run along the upper and lower edges of the body. The item stands 2 cm high, measures 6 cm wide and is 4.5 cm deep. Suitable for placement on an office desk in a study or library setting, the box serves as a functional container for small desk accessories or as a decorative display piece on a table. The silver surface catches the light, while the engraved patterns provide a textured finish across the lid and the strong hinge operates smoothly to secure the closure.

A Georgian silver snuff box is a small, hinged metal container crafted in Great Britain during the reign of Kings George I through George IV, spanning 1714 to 1830. These personal boxes were designed to carry finely ground tobacco powder and showcased period craftsmanship through techniques like hand-engraving, chasing, and engine turning.

Silversmiths predominantly worked with sterling silver, which was stamped with official assay hallmarks to guarantee metal purity. Construction involved shaping silver sheets by hand, casting raised borders, soldering flush hinges, and executing surface decoration such as scrollwork, foliate motifs, or bright-cut engraving.

Authentic British Georgian silver features a full set of assay hallmarks, typically including the makers mark, a lion passant denoting sterling purity, a town mark, a date letter, and the monarchs head duty mark. Natural wear around the hinge, period solder joins, and crisp hand-engraved details further verify authenticity.

An antique silver snuff box serves as an accent piece when placed on an office desk, coffee table, or styled atop a stack of books on a shelf. The reflective metal provides visual warmth and historical contrast against modern stone, glass, or dark wood surfaces.

Dust the surface using a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth and apply a specialist silver polish sparingly using cotton wool to prevent paste accumulation in engraved recesses. Avoid over-polishing to preserve crisp engraved details, and store the box in a dry, low-humidity setting to reduce oxidisation.
