Description

A smart and very well made antique Victorian walnut open bookcase. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1870-1890 period.

The quality is superb, there are beautifully carved corbels at the upper corners and lovely carved rosettes at the bottom corners. This sits on a plinth base, it has three adjustable shelves. The walnut grain patterns and colour tones and beautiful throughout.

This is in excellent condition for its age, we have had it re-polished. There is just some minor old wear here and there remaining beneath the polish here and there, commensurate for age.

Victorian bookcases often feature rich dark woods, classical architectural motifs, and sturdy proportions that reflect the industrial and craftsmanship advancements of the 19th century.

These pieces were typically constructed using solid hardwoods and veneers such as walnut or mahogany, employing traditional joinery like dovetails and mortise and tenon frames.

Authenticity is indicated by period-appropriate hand-cut joinery, timber shrinkage, natural patination, and the use of secondary woods consistent with 19th-century cabinetmaking.

Pairing historical wooden furniture with modern minimalist decor, neutral walls, and curated collections of books creates a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Maintain antique wooden furniture by keeping it out of direct sunlight, avoiding extreme humidity fluctuations, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the finish.
