Description

Mid 20th century 18ct gold platinum diamond opal ring. This absolutely beautiful quality ring has a very impressive opal cabochon which measures 8mm by 7mm and has a fantastic play of different colours including reds, greens blues and oranges and has colour displays from every angle. Surrounding the opal is a wonderful design of 16 small bright round cut diamonds haloing the opal of 1.5mm each. Total weight 0.32ct. All stones are set into a platinum head measuring 12mm x 9mm. This is really a pretty antique ring. The 18ct shank is hallmarked for 18ct and platinum and probably dates to the mid 20th century around the 1960s. The ring really is top quality and also is in excellent condition for its age. Ring Size UK K 1/2 U.S 5 1/2 the total weight is 3.2g.

Opal and diamond cluster rings gained immense popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, continuing through the mid-20th century. The combination of colourful opals surrounded by sparkling diamonds was favoured for engagement rings and high-end dress jewellery due to the symbolism of hope and purity associated with opals.

Mid-century cluster rings typically feature combinations of 18-carat yellow gold bands with platinum settings for the gemstones. Platinum was frequently used for the claws and surrounding halo to securely hold diamonds and enhance their white brilliance, contrasting with the warm tone of gold.

Authentic vintage pieces often feature hallmark stamps indicating metal purity, hand-cut or single-cut diamonds appropriate to the era, and natural opals exhibiting a characteristic play-of-colour. Examination under magnification reveals hand-finished settings and traditional claw or milgrain work distinct from modern mass-produced casting.

A vintage gold cluster ring serves as a striking standalone statement piece or can be paired with minimalist contemporary bands to create a textured, curated stack. Its classic proportions allow it to transition seamlessly from daily wear to formal evening attire.

Opals contain water and are softer than diamonds, requiring gentle care to prevent scratching or dehydration. They should be cleaned using a soft damp cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips, ultrasonic cleaners, and prolonged exposure to extreme heat or dryness.
