This late nineteenth-century hall lantern adopts a Georgian Revival style, constructed from heavy-gauge brass and clear glass panels. The hexagonal brass-framed body features six bevelled glass panes, including one panel hinged as an access door, alongside decorative drop-finials at the frame corners and a circular brass ring on the internal base. The upper section incorporates a ceiling-hanging loop, an oval-link hanging chain, C-scroll brackets on the cage top, and a central brass hanging spindle with three lamp-holders and candle sleeve sockets. The brass exhibits an aged antique brass finish with a period-style patina. Measuring 62 cm high, 30 cm wide, and 30 cm deep, the lantern provides a practical scale for residential placement. Positioned as ceiling lighting, this lantern suits installation in traditional English country house entrance halls, corridors, or stairwells. The fitting requires professional rewiring to meet modern electrical specifications before installation in a domestic setting.

Hall lanterns emerged in the eighteenth century as functional lighting for draughty entryways and stairwells. The enclosed glass panels protected open candle flames or oil burners from currents of air while distributing light evenly throughout hallways.

Traditional hall lanterns are constructed using cast or sheet brass frames, fitted with clear blown or flat glass panels. Internal fittings often feature brass sleeves or candle tubes designed to conceal electrical wiring or candle sockets.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-soldered frame joints, natural age-related patination in recessed areas, and hand-cut glass panels. Later revival pieces may show cast brass details with consistent machine finishing and original earthing or wiring points.

A period brass lantern works effectively as a focal point in an entryway, stairwell, or high-ceiling corridor. It complements both classical architectural features and modern minimalist schemes by introducing warm metallic accents and structural geometric lines.

Dust the brass frame regularly using a dry, soft microfibre cloth without harsh chemical polishes that strip original patination. Glass panels should be cleaned with a mild glass cleaner applied directly to a cloth rather than sprayed onto the frame.
