17th Century Charles II Oak Geometric Chest of Drawers, C1680

17th century
Description

Charming 17th-Century Charles II Jacobean Geometric Chest of Drawers with Superb Patina

A wonderfully characterful late 17th-century Charles II Jacobean oak geometric chest of drawers, boasting exceptional colour, depth and patina.

This finely crafted piece features a rectangular planked top with moulded edge, above four long graduated, oak lined drawers, all enriched with crisp geometric moulding. The drawers retain their original brass drop handles, escutcheons and locks, adding both visual interest and great authenticity. Raised on its original front bun feet and rear square stile feet, with original planked back and panelled sides, this chest offers a completely honest, untouched feel that is increasingly hard to find. The rich, warm colour and beautifully matured surface bear the hallmark of over three centuries of careful use and polishing.

Made in England circa 1680, this is a highly decorative and practical piece of early oak furniture that would sit equally well in a period room or as a striking contrast in a more contemporary interior, a true collector’s item with real presence and charm.

This seventeenth-century Charles II chest of drawers dates from around 1680 and follows a Jacobean English country house style. Made from warm brown oak with brass hardware, the piece presents a rectangular planked top above four long graduated drawers. Each drawer front displays crisp geometric octagonal mouldings, central brass escutcheons, and hanging brass teardrop handles suspended from small pins. The timber shows a deep, mature surface patina with visible grain and natural colour variation across the front and panelled sides. The structure is raised at the front on turned bun feet and at the back on square stile supports. Measuring 101 cm high, 105 cm wide, and 60 cm deep, the unit offers practical storage capacity for a hallway, bedroom, or living space. It sits comfortably in period interiors as well as providing a textural contrast within more contemporary home environments. The untouched construction retains its original backboards and locks behind the traditional moulded drawer fronts.

A Charles II geometric chest of drawers, originating in late seventeenth-century England, features applied mitred mouldings on the drawer fronts that form octagonal or rectangular geometric shapes, reflecting Carolean cabinetmaking styles.

Furniture from this period was constructed using solid English oak with mortise and tenon joinery, side-runner drawer suspension, hand-cut dovetails or nailed joints, and brass teardrop drop handles set on floral brass plates.

Authentic pieces display hand-sawn timber marks, uneven wear on internal side runners, original pegged joinery, period-correct brass or iron fittings, and dark oxidisation on unvarnished interior drawer lining.

A geometric oak chest acts as a grounding anchor in entryways or living spaces, contrasting effectively with neutral wall finishes, contemporary abstract art, and minimalist modern lighting.

Maintain historic oak by placing it away from direct radiators or central heating sources, maintaining stable humidity levels, and applying a clear beeswax polish periodically with a soft cloth.
