This nineteenth-century Dutch taste commode is a shaped front oak chest of drawers crafted in a warm brown timber. The piece has four graduated drawers featuring serpentine shaped fronts, original brass rope ring handles, keyhole escutcheons, and bracket feet. Surface details include minor surface marks and expected age splits to the side while remaining structurally sound. Measuring 81 cm high, 93.3 cm wide, and 53 cm deep, the proportions suit practical storage needs. In a modern home, this chest functions well in a hallway, bedroom, or living space as a practical storage unit and display surface. The deep wood tones and traditional hardware integrate smoothly into classic or rustic interior schemes. Placing lamps, framed photographs, or decorative objects on the top surface creates a functional focal point within the room, while the four deep drawers provide ample hidden storage for household items, clothing, or linens.

FAQs

A shaped front chest of drawers, often referred to as a block front or bow-front commode, features a cabinet facade with contoured, curved, or recessed wooden panels across the drawer fronts rather than a flat surface.

Chests from this era were primarily constructed using solid oak or oak veneers over softwood carcases, secured with hand-cut dovetail joints, wood pegging, and fitted with brass keyhole escutcheons and drop or ring handles.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints inside the drawers, irregular tool marks on unexposed backboards, natural shrinkage lines along solid timber panels, and aged patination around original brass fittings.

An antique oak chest serves as a grounding focal point in contemporary spaces, providing functional storage in hallways, bedrooms, or living rooms while contrasting with minimalist architectural lines and modern artwork.

Dust regularly with a soft lint-free cloth and apply high-quality beeswax twice yearly along the grain. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent timber cracking or warping.
