Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of 19th-century Swedish chests of drawers comes from the Gustavian period, constructed from pine with a light grey hand-painted finish. Each commode has a rectangular top with a moulded edge and canted corners featuring fluted pilasters and applied carved lion mask roundels, raised on turned tapered feet. Brass ring handles and brass escutcheons adorn the drawers, with cartouche-shaped detailing on the top drawer hardware, while minor paint fading and surface marks show signs of age. Measuring 69.9 cm high, 82 cm wide, and 43.2 cm deep, these chests offer practical storage solutions. Today, these versatile commodes suit placement in multiple rooms around the home, including the bedroom as bedside tables, a hallway for storing accessories, or a living room for everyday use. The drawers run clean and true, ensuring functionality alongside their classic aesthetic. Their balanced proportions and neutral palette integrate smoothly into traditional and modern interiors alike.

FAQs

19th-century Swedish furniture often draws from Gustavian and Neoclassical influences, characterised by fluted columns, carved motifs, balanced symmetry, and pale painted finishes designed to reflect natural light.

These chests were predominantly crafted from native European softwoods such as pine or fir, fitted with brass keyhole escutcheons and handles, and finished with layered chalk or milk paint.

Authentic pieces display historical construction methods such as hand-cut dovetail joints, pegged timber framing, natural age-related wear to the paint layers, and original soft-grained backing boards.

Their neutral grey and off-white tones allow them to anchor contemporary bedrooms, hallways, or living spaces, blending seamlessly alongside modern minimalist decor or classic period furnishings.

Clean surfaces gently using a dry or slightly damp microfibre cloth without harsh chemicals, and maintain stable indoor humidity levels to prevent timber movement and paint flaking.
