Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These Swedish Gustavian style commodes date from the nineteenth century around 1880, functioning as a matching pair of three-drawer chests. Constructed from pine with an off-white painted finish, the pieces display refined neoclassical detailing throughout. Each cabinet has a rectangular top edged with dentil moulding above a graduated three-drawer configuration fitted with round brass ring pulls. Fluted pilasters flank the front corners, leading down to carved square tapered feet. Visible decorative elements include subtly distressed paintwork revealing the underlying timber texture in pale cream tones, neat key escutcheons on the drawer fronts, and delicate fluting on the vertical structural borders. Measuring 83 cm high, 83 cm wide, and 46 cm deep, these compact chests suit versatile placement throughout a contemporary residence. They function particularly well as bedside cabinets in a principal bedroom, lamp tables flanking a sofa in a living room, or storage chests in a hallway or landing. The neutral palette and restrained proportions integrate smoothly into traditional or modern interior schemes, providing practical surface area and enclosed drawer storage while maintaining a bright, balanced aesthetic.

FAQs

Gustavian style originated in late 18th-century Sweden under King Gustav III, heavily influenced by French Neoclassicism. It is characterised by restrained carved details, fluted legs, and light painted finishes designed to maximize interior luminescence during northern winters.

Traditional Swedish commodes are constructed primarily from native softwoods such as pine or fir, occasionally incorporating hardwoods for structural elements. The surfaces feature hand-distressed painted finishes, often in shades of grey, cream, or soft white, fitted with cast brass handles and escutcheons.

Genuine period pieces display hand-dovetailed drawer joinery, original pegged construction, and authentic surface wear showing underlying wood or older paint layers. The presence of original period brass hardware and hand-planed back panels further indicates historical authenticity.

Painted commodes function effectively as flanking bedside tables, hallway storage, or focal chests in contemporary living spaces. Their neutral pale finishes and Neoclassical proportions allow them to balance modern minimal decor alongside traditional furnishings.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes. Maintain stable humidity and temperature levels within the room to prevent wood movement, paint flaking, or joinery separation.
