A Georgian silver snuff box is a small, hinged container crafted from sterling silver during the Georgian era, specifically designed to hold ground tobacco leaves for inhalation.

These items were typically fabricated from sterling silver using techniques such as casting, repousse, chasing, and engine-turning to create elaborate surface decoration.

Authentic pieces are identified by examining the hallmarks stamped on the metal, which usually include a makers mark, assay office mark, standard mark, and a date letter corresponding to the active period.

Such small decorative items are typically placed on a mantelpiece, inside a glass-fronted cabinet, or styled on a coffee table as part of a curated collection of curiosities.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly with a soft cloth and specialist silver polish, avoiding harsh abrasives, and kept in a stable environment away from excessive humidity to prevent tarnishing.
