Description

A stunning antique Victorian carved mahogany bench / stool by Waring and Gillows. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1880-1900 period.

It is of extremely fine quality and is a very useful item, perfect for use in various settings including as a window seat, bench at the end of a bed or as an entry way bench. The solid mahogany frame has profuse and crisp carving, it is finished identically front and back, so can be used as a free standing item.

We have had the frame re-polished, we have also had it fully re-upholstered in a cream cotton fabric. The condition is excellent for its age, with just some extremely minor wear remaining beneath the polish here and there.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian seating is characterised by revivalism, incorporating classical proportions, heavy carved wooden frames, and often elaborate upholstery reflecting the eclectic tastes of the 19th century.

These pieces typically feature dense hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, traditionally joined with mortise and tenon techniques, and finished with hand-carved detailing and traditional upholstery stuffing.

Authenticity is indicated by timber oxidisation, hand-cut joinery, traditional hand-carved motifs, and maker marks or stamps corresponding to known cabinetmakers of the era.

An antique bench functions effectively as an end-of-bed accent, a hallway seating piece, or a sophisticated window seat, pairing period craftsmanship with modern minimalist surroundings.

Preserve the timber using microcrystalline wax to nourish the grain, and protect the upholstery from direct sunlight and moisture using professional cleaning methods.
