Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

Crystal chandeliers originated in the medieval period when wood crosses fitted with candles were hoisted to ceilings. By the 17th and 18th centuries, the addition of lead crystal prisms dramatically increased light refraction, transforming these fixtures into status symbols for grand estates and noble homes.

Authentic period chandeliers typically feature hand-cast brass, bronze, or iron frames fitted with hand-cut or machine-pressed lead crystal prisms. Components are often held together by wired pins or delicate chains, reflecting the meticulous metalwork and glass-cutting techniques of their era.

Authentic antique pieces often exhibit signs of age such as minor oxidisation on the metal frame, hand-filed joints, and subtle irregularities in the glass prisms, including tiny bubbles or hand-cut facets. Examining the wiring, fixing mechanisms, and fastener types can also provide reliable clues regarding the period of manufacture.

Integrating an antique chandelier into a modern interior creates a striking focal point through the juxtaposition of historical craftsmanship and clean lines. Hanging the fixture in unexpected spaces, such as a minimalist hallway or above a modern dining table, adds texture and sophisticated contrast.

Maintenance requires gentle cleaning using a microfibre cloth and a mild solution of distilled water and isopropyl alcohol to avoid damaging the metal or leaving residue on the glass. Prisms should be cleaned individually in situ rather than submerged, and harsh chemical cleaners must be avoided to preserve the original patina.
