A pair of French wrought iron and painted wall sconces from circa 1930 bring decorative lighting to a home in the 1930s French style. Each wall sconce is made from wrought iron with a polychrome finish in gold, red, blue and green, featuring detailed scrollwork, foliate leaves, tulip-shaped light cups and heart motifs at the top. The pieces show visible electrical wires hanging from the bottom, aged paint finishes and intricate metalwork decoration. Measuring 61 cm high, 41 cm wide and 5 cm deep, these wall sconces fit well in a narrow wall space such as a hallway, bedroom or living room.

Crafted during the interwar period, French wrought iron wall sconces combine traditional blacksmithing techniques with decorative motifs such as scrollwork and foliate leaves. They were frequently finished with polychrome paint or gilding to complement period interior schemes.

These lighting fixtures were constructed primarily from hand-forged wrought iron or hammered steel, finished with applied paintwork, gold leaf, or bronzing powders. Fabrication involved riveted joints, metal collars, and welded connections to build layered floral designs.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-hammered surface textures, slight natural variances in symmetry, and surface patination or paint wear consistent with age. Original internal wiring channels and substantial iron weight also help distinguish early production from modern cast reproductions.

Mount wall sconces in pairs to frame architectural focal points such as fireplace alcoves, hall mirrors, or artwork. Their sculpted forms and metallic highlights provide textural contrast when set against plain, lime-washed, or deep-toned wall surfaces.

Dust the metalwork regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush to remove dust from crevices and leaf detailing. Avoid liquid chemical cleaners that may compromise original polychrome finishes, and consult a qualified electrician to inspect and update vintage wiring for modern standards.
