Victorian sterling silver encompasses pieces manufactured during the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901), typically characterised by heavy ornamentation, revivalist motifs such as Gothic or Rococo influences, and strict standard hallmarking regulations overseen by British assay offices.

These items were traditionally fashioned from sterling silver, often featuring pierced or reticulated openwork bodies designed to display a contrasting dark cobalt blue glass liner within. Construction methods included casting, hand-piercing, soldering, and fitting with hinged lids and scroll handles.

Authenticity is verified through clear hallmarks stamped into the metal, which typically include the makers mark, the lion passant indicating sterling standard, the leopards head or other assay office mark, and a date letter corresponding to the specific year of production.

These small objects serve as refined accent pieces on dining tables, sideboards, or open shelving, adding metallic contrast and historical texture to modern table settings or curated vitrines.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a specialized non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth to maintain the patina, avoiding harsh dips that can strip historical oxidisation from recessed details.
