Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Plated wirework construction: technique developed in Sheffield during the late 18th century.
Copper bleeding through the high points: natural wear on fused plate.
Inset solid silver crest plaque: standard method for engraving without revealing copper.
Neoclassical boat-shaped outline: design favoured in the 1780s and 1790s.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Georgian period silver wirework basket originates from the late 18th century. The piece takes the form of an oval vessel fabricated from Old Sheffield Plate and silver wire, displaying a silver colour finish with small patches of copper bleed visible on the wirework and central bowl. Structural details include a flared rim, a reeded oval pedestal base, an overhead arched swing handle attached with circular hardware, and an open wirework frame constructed of intact parallel vertical wires. The central interior bowl features a ducal crest depicting a swan. Measuring 28 cm high, 36.5 cm wide, and 22.5 cm deep, this basket works well placed on a sideboard top in a traditional English country house interior setting. The good overall condition presents no dents or splits, and the plating remains in good order. Practical applications include serving as a decorative table centrepiece or holding fruit, biscuits, or dried floral arrangements in a dining room or living area.

Old Sheffield Plate refers to a manufacturing technique discovered in the 1740s where copper is fused between thin sheets of sterling silver before being rolled and fashioned into decorative hollowware.

These baskets were made using silver-plated copper wire drawn through perforated plates and soldered onto a raised oval pedestal base.

Authentic pieces often exhibit thin visible copper layers along unsoldered edges, slight copper bleed where silver wire has worn, and seamless hand-soldered wire joints characteristic of Georgian fusing methods.

Positioned on a sideboard or dining table, a silver wire basket acts as a reflective accent piece that holds decorative fruit, linen napkins, or seasonal botanicals.

Wipe gently with a soft microfibre cloth and specialised non-abrasive silver polish, avoiding dipping solutions that erode the delicate silver layer and expose underlying copper.
