Description

An absolutely stunning Art Deco Amboyna and inlaid satin wood leather top desk. This was made in England by Frederick Restall of Birmingham, it dates from the 1930’s.

The quality is absolutely amazing, this has an incredibly beautiful and stylish design. The kidney shaped top stands on beautiful sabre shaped legs which are scrolled at the top edges. The back is nicely finished, so this can be used as a free standing item. The amboyna grain patterns and colour tones are incredibly beautiful, they contrast very nicely with the inlaid satin wood and deep green leather top.

We have had this stripped and re-polished to a very high standard, the condition is superb throughout.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco emerged in France during the 1910s and flourished internationally during the 1920s and 1930s, characterised by sleek geometric shapes, streamlined forms, and the use of opulent materials such as exotic veneers and metals.

Art Deco pieces frequently utilise exotic hardwood veneers like amboyna, burr walnut, and satinwood, often paired with contrasting inlay details, solid timber frames, and inset leather writing surfaces.

Authentic pieces are identified through period-correct construction methods, genuine exotic wood veneers with natural ageing patterns, traditional joinery, and characteristic stylistic motifs such as symmetry and streamlined curves.

Pair the piece with minimalist modern seating to highlight its sculptural form, and keep surface accessories restrained to showcase the natural grain of the wood and the inset leather top.

Maintain wooden surfaces with a microcrystalline wax to protect the veneer, and clean the leather inset with a dry or barely damp cloth, avoiding harsh chemical solvents and direct sunlight.
