Description

Romantic antique silver earrings studded with twinkling foil-backed pastes in pretty milgrain-edged settings arranged in a scrolling floral pattern.

The French jeweller Georges Frédéric Strass invented “Paste" in 1724. True paste is crafted from a special leaded glass that was painstakingly cut and then polished by hand with metal powder until it appeared to shimmer like a diamond. It was an instant success with the chic upper classes of Parisian society and continues to be highly sought after today. Nowadays paste is often used as a generic term to describe costume gemstones.

• Condition: Very good antique condition, with minor surface wear and slight variations in the paste colours, see photos.

• Fixing: Silver ear wires, likely added later, supplied with tiny silicone "keepers" to pop on the back for extra security.

• Estimated Victorian (c.1837-1901).

• Size: 5 x 1.8cm, not including the ear wire.

• Weight: 9.5g.

Paste jewellery refers to items set with hand-cut high-refractive glass designed to imitate precious gemstones like diamonds, which gained immense popularity during the Georgian and Victorian eras for its brilliant sparkle and intricate craftsmanship.

Victorian paste earrings were typically crafted using sterling silver or silver-gilt, often referred to as pinchbeck or foiled settings, which securely held hand-faceted lead glass stones designed to catch candlelight.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit closed-back metal settings, hand-cut stones with minor surface wear consistent with age, and individual collet settings rather than modern mass-produced prong mounts.

These statement pieces can be worn to add historical contrast to modern evening wear or displayed within a glass-topped jewellery case as part of a curated collectors vignette.

Paste jewellery should never be submerged in water or liquid jewellery cleaners, as moisture can seep behind the stones and ruin the reflective foil backing; instead, clean gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth.
