Napkin rings first appeared in France during the early 19th century as a means of identifying household members linens between washings. By the Victorian era, they became popular dining accessories across Europe and Britain, frequently given as gifts for weddings, christenings, and anniversaries.

Traditional napkin rings are typically crafted from sterling silver, silver-plate, or occasionally bone and ivory. Silversmiths employed techniques such as stamping, embossing, piercing, and hand-engraving to decorate the cylindrical bands with monograms, floral motifs, or geometric borders.

Authentic pieces are identified by examining hallmarks stamped on the metal, which indicate the metal standard, assay office, and date letter. Genuine older items also exhibit natural patina, minor surface wear from use, and traditional construction methods rather than modern casting lines.

These pieces can be incorporated into contemporary table settings to add polish and heritage character. They also function well as decorative objects when displayed in a vitrine, on a sideboard, or utilized creatively as small holders for place cards or dried floral stems.

Silver should be cleaned periodically using a specialised non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth to remove tarnish without scratching the metal. Store them in a dry, tarnish-resistant lining or box away from direct sunlight and humidity to preserve their finish.
