FAQs

Match strikers gained popularity during the Victorian era when safety matches were invented and smoking became a widespread social habit, necessitating dedicated desktop vessels to ignite matches.

Match strikers were predominantly crafted from sterling silver, brass, porcelain, or glass, frequently featuring ribbed or striated surfaces designed to create friction for igniting strike-anywhere matches.

Authentic period pieces can be identified by hallmarks stamped into the metal indicating the assay office, metal purity, and date letter, alongside appropriate surface wear and traditional manufacturing techniques.

This piece can be styled on a coffee table, bookcase, or desk to add a touch of metallic sheen and historical character while functioning as a decorative vessel for matches.

Preserve antique silver by gently cleaning it with a specialist silver cloth to remove tarnish, avoiding harsh chemical dips, and storing it in a stable environment away from high humidity.
