Description

I am very partial to the antique rugs of the Baluch tribes of Ferdows for their beautiful, natural, indigo-blue ground depicting a water-garden with stylised fish swimming around water-lilies and their powerful madder-red border with the flower and vine pattern.

These Ferdows Baluch rugs are seldom seen in the Western market-place these days, and this one recently came to me from one of my Afghanistan sources.

This rug, made circa 1900, is larger than most Ferdows rugs I've located over the past 40 years, with exceptionally lustrous woollen pile, cotton warps and wefts, and in excellent condition.

As a comparison, please see the beautiful Ferdows rug illustrated in the third edition of my book 'Tribal Rugs - Treasures of the Black Tent' on page 118, which is of a slightly earlier date.

Size: 2.18m x 1.34m (7' 2" x 4' 5").

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

Baluch rugs are traditionally woven by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes residing in the borderlands of Persia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, typically characterised by dark wool foundations, geometric motifs, and rich dark colour palettes.

These rugs are hand-knotted using handspun wool for the pile, warp, and weft, often incorporating dark wool or goat hair in the outer cord edges, and dyed using natural vegetable or mineral dyes.

Authentic pieces exhibit irregularities in weave and symmetry, natural abrash variations in colour, hand-spun wool with lanolin retention, and authentic wear patterns consistent with nomadic use rather than machine-made uniformity.

An antique tribal rug provides rich texture and colour contrast, working effectively as a focal point in a neutral living room, study, or hallway to ground modern minimalist or traditional furniture schemes.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, professional specialised washing, avoiding direct prolonged sunlight, and using a breathable, high-quality rug underlay to prevent sliding and fibre abrasion.
