Antique Timuri or Baluch Main Carpet, Western Afghanistan, Circa 1880.

19th century
Description

Size: 10ft 0in x 5ft 6in (306 x 167cm).

Antique Timuri or Baluch main carpet of classic hooked medallion design.

Circa 1880.

A good example of a Timuri main carpet with the traditional Timuri hooked medallion design. The carpet probably originates from the area around Farah or Chakhansur, in Western Afghanistan near the borders with eastern Persia; and has some Taimani influence. The carpet is woven in shades of madder red, light and dark indigo blue, olive brown and ivory; the overall colour palette is warm and soft. The main border is of a repeat diamond design with very well drawn reciprocal rams horn inner and outer guards. Note the very long original kilim end finishes in bands of different colours.

The carpet is in good condition with some wear and medium pile, there are a few historic old repairs.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Timuri and Baluch carpets are hand-woven textiles created by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes along the border regions of Iran and Afghanistan. They are recognised for their dark, saturated colour palettes, geometric diamond or latch-hook motifs, and flatweave kilim ends.

These carpets were typically woven using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation, occasionally incorporating goat hair for additional structural durability. Dyes were derived from natural vegetable and mineral sources, creating subtle colour variations throughout the field.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-knotted wool construction with a flexible handle, natural dye abrash, dark tone combinations such as indigo, madder red, and dark brown, alongside distinct flatweave skirts at the top and bottom borders.

A dark tribal carpet provides visual weight and rich geometric patterning in contemporary spaces. It serves as an anchoring floor covering in minimalist interiors, mid-century layouts, or traditional study environments.

Regular gentle vacuuming without a rotating beater bar prevents fibre degradation and dust accumulation. Professional cleaning using non-chemical wool-safe methods is recommended, alongside the use of a underlay pad to protect against friction wear.
