Antique Timuri Yaqoub Khani / Baluch Prayer Rug, Very Early Example, Circa 1870 or Earlier.

19th century
Description

Size: 4ft 8in x 2ft 9in (142 x 85cm).

Antique Baluch prayer rug by the Yaqoub Khani sub tribe of the Timuri, with box design on a camel wool ground.

Circa 1870 or earlier.

This is a very unusual and possibly rare Timuri / Baluch prayer rug, the well known box design is on a camel ground. The drawing of the 'willow leaf' design in the camel coloured boxes is very detailed with an archaic feel. The hand placements are of willow leaf design. Note the original flat woven panel with bands of piled work at the upper end. The border is of a very simple leaf design.

All of the design elements point towards this being a very early example of this type of prayer rug, I have not seen an earlier example published.

The rug is in fair condition with wear in places and medium pile. The rug has some old repairs, mainly to the sides and some old areas of slight damage. This is a collectable rug that would make a superb wall hanging.

The rug is suitable for light domestic use.

Stock Number: DS-0488.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Timuri Baluch prayer rug is a hand-knotted tribal textile woven by the Timuri sub-tribe of the Baluch people, historically located in eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. These rugs are distinctive for their dark palette, geometric iconography, and structured mihrab arch design used to orient the user during prayer.

Traditional Baluch rugs feature a pure wool pile knotted onto a wool or goat hair warp and weft foundation. The yarn is hand-spun and coloured using natural organic dyes derived from madder root, indigo, and walnut husks.

Authentic 19th-century examples display soft, lustrous hand-spun wool, flexible handle, and asymmetrical knotting. They typically feature saturated dark colours such as indigo, terracotta, and deep brown, along with flat-woven kilim ends or decorated selvedges.

A small tribal prayer rug functions well as a focal point in an entryway, alongside natural timber furniture, or mounted on a wall as a textile art piece. It can also be layered over larger neutral sisal or flat-weave carpets to introduce pattern and texture.

Vacuum gently without using a rotary beater bar to avoid pulling hand-knotted fibers. Direct sunlight should be avoided to prevent fading of natural dyes, and professional cleaning should only be carried out by specialist antique rug restorers.
