Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

French gilt bronze wall lights, often referred to as appliques, gained prominence during the 17th and 18th centuries in royal palaces and aristocratic residences. Master metalworkers employed fire-gilding techniques to apply gold amalgam to bronze, creating durable pieces that reflected candle or gas light effectively.

These fixtures are typically crafted from cast bronze, which is then meticulously chased to refine surface details. The characteristic golden finish is achieved through mercury gilding or modern electroplating methods, paired with brass drip pans and internal wiring adaptations for electrical use.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit hand-chased detailing with crisp relief work, casting imperfections on the reverse, and heavy bronze weight rather than lightweight modern metals. Patina accumulation in recessed areas and period-appropriate mounting hardware also indicate age.

Integrating antique sconces into modern spaces adds textural contrast and historical depth, particularly when flanked by minimalist artwork or mounted against dramatic dark-painted walls. Pairing them with warm LED candle bulbs bridges the gap between historic craftsmanship and modern functionality.

Gilded surfaces require delicate care to prevent stripping the thin gold layer. Dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth is recommended, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive polishes, or excessive moisture that can damage the metallic finish.
