A Chinese blue and white ginger jar table lamp, dating from the late nineteenth century in the Chinoiserie style. The piece consists of an ovoid porcelain vessel with a white glaze and blue hand-painted coastal landscape decoration showing houses and ships. It is mounted with brass fittings, including a top plate and bulb holder, and stands on a dark turned ebonised wooden base. The ginger jar retains small metal hinge brackets from its original lid. The lamp measures 30.5 cm high and 25 cm in diameter. It provides practical task or accent lighting on a sideboard top or side table in an English Country House setting.

Originating as ceramic storage vessels in China, ginger jars were historically used to store spices such as ginger. In later centuries, particularly during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, many were converted or crafted into table lamp bases for Western interiors.

These lamps are typically constructed from high-fired porcelain or earthenware decorated with cobalt blue underglaze motifs. The electrical components feature brass fittings and mounting plates, supported by a turned wooden base.

Authentic pieces feature hand-painted underglaze cobalt motifs showing subtle variations in brushwork and tone rather than uniform printed transfer designs. Age is also indicated by foot rim wear, hand-thrown pottery lines, and minor glaze firing marks.

A ginger jar lamp functions as an accent on a sideboard, console table, or bedside nightstand when paired with a neutral silk or linen shade. It balances dark timber furniture as well as minimalist contemporary settings.

Clean the ceramic surface regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid harsh chemical cleansers or excess water near the electrical wiring and brass mountings.
