Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This classical revival standard lamp dates from 1920 in the English country house style. The piece comprises a carved giltwood structure with a spiral barley twist column, acanthus leaf carvings, and mouldings, raised on a circular stepped base with bun feet. A pale blue patterned fabric shade with a cream fringed border tops the lamp. The gold and pale blue colour scheme complements the gilt finish and textile elements. Measuring 157 cm high, 34 cm wide, and 34 cm deep, the lamp sits well in an empty corner of a living room, hallway, or study. The upright floor placement provides ambient lighting for domestic spaces.

FAQs

A giltwood standard lamp is a floor-standing luminaire featuring a timber shaft carved with decorative detailing and finished with gold leaf or gilding to provide elevated ambient lighting.

These lamps were typically hand-carved from hardwoods such as beech or lime, coated with a gesso base, and finished using water gilding or oil gilding with thin sheets of gold leaf.

Authentic giltwood displays natural wear on high points revealing the underlying red or yellow bole clay layer, alongside carved timber joinery and solid physical weight.

Position the standard lamp in a reading corner, alongside a sofa, or within an alcove to introduce metallic texture and architectural height to contemporary living spaces.

Dust gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding water, chemical solvents, or liquid waxes, as moisture can dissolve gesso and ruin delicate gilded finishes.
