FAQs

Introduced in the late 19th century, egg coddlers became popular dining accessories in Victorian households for cooking eggs directly inside a device submerged in boiling water or fitted with a burner.

These pieces were typically constructed from copper, brass, or Britannia metal as a base, finished with a heavy electroplated silver (EPNS) coating, often featuring ceramic inserts and cast metal stands.

Authentic pieces often exhibit period manufacturer hallmarks, maker marks for electroplate quality, heavy-gauge construction, and natural wear patterns such as subtle silver loss on high-friction areas.

It can be displayed on a sideboard or within a dining room cabinet as a focal point of historical silver collection, adding a touch of period elegance to contemporary tablescapes.

Clean only with a non-abrasive, specialized silver polish and a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip the historic plating and oxidisation.
