FAQs

Bohemian glass lustres are ornamental candle holders adorned with hanging glass prisms, which reached peak popularity during the 19th century, particularly within the Victorian and Biedermeier periods. Artisans in the Bohemia region (now the Czech Republic) became internationally renowned for their mastery in coloured and cut glass production.

These pieces are typically crafted using cased or overlay glass, where a layer of coloured glass is fused over a white or clear glass base. Artisans then employed wheel-cutting techniques to cut through the outer coloured layer, revealing the contrasting base glass beneath, and frequently added hand-painted floral enamels and gilded accents.

Authentic period pieces often feature hand-cut facets with slight irregularities, hand-applied enamel decoration, and genuine lead crystal or glass prisms suspended by wire hooks rather than modern metal connectors. Examining the underside of the base usually reveals a polished pontil mark and signs of age-related wear such as fine scratches.

These decorative objects can be placed symmetrically on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table to add a touch of colour, historical texture, and reflective light to a room. Their classic silhouette works well in both traditional spaces and eclectic modern rooms where mixed periods are celebrated.

To preserve fragile hand-painted details and gilding, lustres should be dusted gently with a soft microfibre cloth rather than submerged in water. Prisms can be carefully removed and washed individually in lukewarm water with mild soap, then dried thoroughly before being reattached.
