Torchieres originated as handheld torches mounted to walls or placed in brackets to illuminate castles, halls, and chateaux before the advent of modern grid electricity.

Traditional sconces were primarily hand-forged from wrought iron, bronze, or brass, often incorporating textiles, wood, or glass elements in later periods.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-forging irregularities, tool marks, period-appropriate fixings, and natural oxidisation rather than uniform machine finishing.

Pairing heavy iron fixtures with clean modern plaster walls creates a striking textural contrast, grounding the room with historic character.

Dust gently with a dry, soft cloth and avoid abrasive chemical cleaners or water to protect the historic patina and any applied finishes.
